When we look at a general skincare routine, it’s a three step process; cleanse, tone and moisturise. Simple right? Well not really…with so many skincare products on the market today, how are we meant to know which one is right for us?
Toner is the skincare step I always used to invest in, but never continuously used like I would cleanse and moisturise. I’ve always had my go to cleaner and moisturiser but finding a go to toner that made me go ‘Wow I need to re purchase this’ never happened. I’m sure some of you have found this as well, that’s why we either skip the second step of the routine or we buy a product that someone has recommended to us and doesn’t necessarily work for you.
Why do I need a toner?
Toner is an essential step in your routine to achieve clear and glowing skin. Toner helps achieve this by removing any residue left on your skin after cleansing, left over cleanser, oil, dirt and importantly the minerals and chlorine that can be found in water. A good toner will re balance the ph in your skin which can be disturbed by ingredients in cleansers. Lastly it will tighten your pores and skin cells, restricting impurities from getting into the skin.
“toner is one of the most important steps in skincare as it completes the cleansing process. Stress and environmental factors can turn the skin’s pH acidic. Plus, any time you cleanse you inevitably strip the skin. So the point of toner is to get rid of the excess oil, dirt, and leftover cleanser and, most important, bring the skin back to its neutral pH level (where it is healthiest and the most glowing).” – Mila Moursi (Makeup Artist to the stars)
What kind of Toner should I use?
It’s very important to choose the right toner for your skin type. When shopping for a toner always look at the ingredients list, stick to the more natural ingredients rather than synthetics. ALWAYS make sure your toner is alcohol free.
Ingredients to look out for?
- Dry/Sensitive – aloe vera, vitamin E, hitch hazel, hyaluronic acid (soothing and hydrating ingredients)
- Normal/Combination – niacinamide, ceremide, primrose, hyaluronic acid (control sebum while moisturising)
- Oily/Acne Prone Skin – tea tree, salicylic acid (calm down blemishes and remove dirt/oil from the skin)
- Anti Ageing – antioxidants, honey, botanical oils (naturalise free radicals, moisturise and hydrate)
Personally, I’m all about skincare products that are as natural as possible. A few months ago I started using a new toner and using it everyday, twice a day. I’ve got to say guys, I’m so impressed.

This product has made a huge difference in keeping my skin clear and tightening my pores. When I stopped using the product for a week (I misplaced it) I noticed the difference.
I apply it twice a day with a cotton pad and let it dry, then I apply my moisturiser or facial oil.
This product contains some of my favourite ingredients such as:

So everyone, I hope this has given you some in sight into the importance of toning your skin. Give it a go and watch your skin improve.
