If you’re reading this because you have a little one on the way, congratulations! The majority of us are becoming much more aware of ingredients, not only from the supermarket but in our beauty cabinets as well. Our skin is the largest organ on our bodies, it absorbs everything we put on it and this in turn can sink into your bloodstream. Pregnancy safe is not the same as normal safe, you’re forced to become a lot more aware of the ingredients you’re using to protect your baby from harm. From skincare to bath bombs and hairspray, here are some things to look out for.
Ingredients to Avoid –
- Chemical sunscreen – the effects of chemical sunscreen in the bloodstream haven’t yet been proven. Stick to physical sunscreens, these sit on the surface of the skin; instead of sinking in. Pregnant women are also more prone to dark spots and hyperpigmentation developing, so up for SPF and avoid sun exposure when you can.
- Formaldehyde – found in nail polishes, eyelash glue, some hair treatment products (let your hairstylist know about your pregnancy before you get into any dyeing or treatments).
- Aluminum chloride hexahydrate – found in antiperspirants.
- Artificial fragrances
If you’re ever unsure of what products or ingredients you can or cannot use, always consult for the doctor first.
Essential Oils to Avoid –
When I worked for Lush cosmetics back in the day, I became aware that not all-natural ingredients are safe for pregnant women. There isn’t enough information on essential oils and pregnancy as a whole, but there is a guideline as to what should not be used as they may cause complications such as uterine contractions.
- Clary Sage
- Parsley seed leaf
I hope this gives you some guidance on your journey to a safe and healthy pregnancy.
